I met Joe when I was a teenager in junior high or maybe a bit before. Our families belonged to the same golf club and I believe our first encounter was when I caddied for him. You can tell a lot about a man’s character on the golf course. He was always very kind and respectful, even to a young caddie. In high school I would come over to visit his daughter and we would often sit around and talk with Joe and Barbara. That was when I learned to appreciate Joe’s wonderful sense of humor. Joe was one of those rare adults who could make an awkward teenager feel as though there was genuine interest in getting to know me as a person.
